The Making: Gathering Table

Nomi’s mission is to connect users directly to the workshop, allowing users to customise furniture online. “The Making” series offers a glimpse into this process. In this edition, we explore how artisans handcraft our popular Gathering Table using natural materials.

Materiality lies at the heart of every design decision, starting with the selection of straight, defect-free oak logs for veneer. These logs are trimmed by the planer to achieve consistent thickness and a smooth, even surface, preparing them for manufacturing.

The vertical ribs of the base are designed to slot into recessed tops, creating a secure fit that ensures lasting structural integrity and durability.

The vacuum veneering process applies precise, even pressure, allowing the veneer to achieve stable curved surfaces that highlight the attention to detail behind each piece.

A specialised mold is then crafted to hot-press the plywood, shaping it into the distinctive rounded form that defines the table base.

Artisans carefully examine the color, grain, and figure of each veneer sheet, then arrange them using techniques like bookmatching—flipping consecutive sheets to create a mirrored pattern—or end matching, where smaller pieces are joined end-to-end, ensuring a cohesive, visually appealing final panel.

This approach highlights the natural beauty and characteristics of the materials we work with. From the warmth of timber grain to the strength of marble, every material reflects our dedication to craftsmanship and authenticity.
